We will discuss the section of coastline on which to base your Chartistic Chart. Charts are available for almost every coastline anywhere in the world. Chartistic mostly uses Admiralty Charts from the UK Hydrographic Office as these are widely available and have a licensing system for use of their data.

Confirm the Order

Having chosen the section of coast, other details such as size, customisation, price, timescale etc. will be agreed. We will always do everything in our power to meet with your exact requirements, timescale and budget.Your Chart is now starting to take form. Details of your order will be sent to you by email for confirmation. This will include a screenshot of the section of coast chosen that will illustrate how the final chart will look. Any changes required can be incorporated into the design at this stage. The order is finally confirmed by payment of a 50% deposit. This is to cover the purchase of the chart of your chosen area (required for licensing purposes) and the significant work of creating the chart in graphic design software.

Graphic Design

All charts are drawn in the form of vector graphics using specialised software.  This transformation into vector graphics is necessary so that the chart can be recreated by the laser equipment. Any customisation that you have requested will be incorporated into the design. Due to limitations with the wood and laser equipment, we adapt the design to ensure that as much detail as possible is included. It is not possible to include all of the details from the paper chart especially very small text and features within very small spaces. Physical limitations do apply due the finite width of the laser beam and its interaction with the wood.

Production

In the production process, your chart will be scheduled onto the laser equipment and the individual pieces will be cut and engraved with amazing precision. All of the pieces are then hand assembled much like the pieces of a jigsaw. Finally, the completed chart is sprayed with a UV protective finish coat and it is ready for framing. Framing is done by a professional framer and this can add up to two weeks to the timescale. All told, and depending on how busy we are, your chart should be delivered within a time frame of 4-6 weeks from receipt of a deposit. If your chart is required in a shorter timeframe, this may be possible following discussion and agreement. You can watch the laser equipment in action below.
